But I really do not wish
to go among mad people...

It was really a lovely day outside. And to make matters better her day was getting much better by the second. She had had a lovely breakfast and she wasn’t feeling very strange at all. For once she could recite her lessons properly without having to worry about forgetting them, and she hadn’t talked to any animals. Maybe this school was here to cure her, or otherwise make her better so she could go home to visit her mother and father. Which was much more appreciated, she did miss her family, and oh she missed her cat, he best friend. Things weren’t always so pleasant in the morning, there were people who were beyond strange, and while she felt curious to get to know them she found herself a little frightened. Hadn’t her mother always told her not to talk to strangers? Of course that never seemed to work anymore…

Alyss was taking the moment to gather her things to go outside. She stole her quilt her mother sent her, and brought a picture book or two before scuttling down stairs in a bit of excitement. She was rather swift on her feet when she wanted to, hurrying down the stairs and moving toward the doors so she could get a nice spot outside. Her blue eyes drifted upward to the sky, noticing some dark colored clouds roll in. She hesitated for a moment, what if it began to rain? Oh dear, she would get wet… No! She wouldn’t let that ruin her day, obviously the clouds weren’t going to be moving in that quickly and she’d just sit under the tree in case it began to sprinkle. Then if it started she’d go in right away. She nodded to herself and made her way across the grassy grounds to find a proper place to sit.

She noticed lots of people outside enjoying the day, some…using their spirits to their advantages, others not really. Her spirit really didn’t have any powers [that she had discovered yet] besides her undying curiosity and her love for picture books. While there were a few, that she knew of, like Quincy who could turn into a caterpillar. Oh my, speaking of the other ‘Wonderlanders’ as she liked to label them, they were all so strange. Often times she found herself drawn to them, at other times she worried for her own health because…well they were all rather crazy. She placed the blanket under the tree and settled herself down, basking in the sun a little before opening one of the larger picture books. There were very few words which Alyss, earlier in life, would have found disappointing. But now they brought her some warm sort of happiness. So much happiness, that she tried to ignore the presence she felt watching her.

The day had started out pretty much like any other for the senior citizen, what he liked to call himself. His morning cup of tea and contaplation, breakfast, and then off to class. He hadn't really seen his other roomate around lately, but she would surely turn up at one time or another. Then the rest of his day was filled with messing around with Quincy. Sure, the other teen was a junior, but it wasn't against the law to be talking to them. Especially when they were turning out to be rather close friends. Well, as close as two of the same kind could be.

Now that the school day was finally over, to the delight of the students, it was time to finally have some more of that "me time" his old tutor had told him he needed every day. So, that was how the red-head found himself sitting outside under some trees drinking yet another cup of tea. Kuro could have been doing something else besides drinking the addictive drink, but there really was nothing else that needed to be done right at that minute. Homework could be done, but what student really wanted to stay inside and do homework? Especially since it looked like it might rain soon.

A flash of blond was seen out of the corner of his eye and before the young man could look over and see who it was the person started to come in the general direction as him. Watching the young women sit down on a quilt and start to read a book Kuro couldn't help but want to go over there and talk to her. There was something inside of him that said that he knew her from somewhere, but Kuro really couldn't place the feeling. Then it hit him, she must be from Wonderland. The place that he had thought he knew everyone from. So, she must be the Alice that had transfered in.

Without feeling bad about staring at her the whole time the senior finally started to gain the confidence to go over there and talk to her. Finally gaining all that he need Kuro gathered up his tea cup and plate and started to meander over to her. Getting to where she was sitting the young man plopped himself down next to her. "Hello there. It is very nice to meet you." The young man said while holding out the hand that wasn't holding the tea things.

When one came outside, one expected to enjoy the sun and generally find themselves in peace and quiet. Alyss would have perhaps preferred to be up in the tree or even in a bed of flowers, relaxing and day dreaming instead of reading this particular book for a lesson, but she didn’t hate it. Lessons were there for very good reason and she wasn’t going to argue against them if they seemed logical enough to put up with her. She turned the page delicately, not really reading it, but now thinking of other things. What would be much more fun then reading a book? She inhaled deeply, exhaling through her nose and shaking the locks out a little around her shoulder to show her sudden discomfort to the face she could have been doing something fun.

It was like a spark. She felt a slight shiver fall down her spine when the person in question took it upon himself to sit beside her. She opened her mouth rather wide to articulate her displeasure when she stopped. How curious was this? She was about to say that it was rude of him to sit down uninvited but for some reason the words caught in her throat…like…that wasn’t her line to say. Instead she closed the book and let it fall into her lap before inspecting him. ”It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” she replied properly, bowing her head at him. This strange man had just come and sit on her quilt without permission and she couldn’t even muster the voice to scold him with. Curiouser.

”I do beg your pardon, but…I have a feeling I know you.” she frowned a little, showing a bit of trouble thought in her expression. Sure she was supposed to feel this way toward a great crowd of people. Apparently she wasn’t to be surprised when people strolled up to her and asked her to tea, because their spirits knew one another. She had a feeling that she knew this person, or at least their spirits knew one another. But she was rather fresh to the campus and hardly knew a soul. It was a whole new world for her and she was falling down rabbit hole after rabbit hole. It never seemed to end.

She looked to the tea cup before gently taking his hand with one of her rather fragile pale white ones, her handshake not very strong, but rather limp. She seemed rather lady like, ”Oh, my manners, I’m Alyss.” she smiled at him. Trying to hide her discomfort on why she felt like she knew the boy rather well… In face she felt like she should be having tea as well…so very curious.

Ah, by the look on her face this other, very cute girl, was going to reprimand him for sitting on her quilt. But, before it could come out of her mouth it was stopped. Just like that. If the senior hadn't known any better he might have thought it strange, but with being around Quincy and his own mad side anything was sane to him. Well, much more out there than the sane that other people had and saw. Sane was just a word though. Who really knew what sane was?

”I do beg your pardon, but…I have a feeling I know you.”

So, she felt it as well. There really must be something between them. Maybe it was just a new feeling, or it might be that their spirits new each other. If they did the red head felt rather sorry for her. Anyone who knew the Mad Hatter was someone who had to be pitied sometimes. Though, the Mad Hatter was very fun to have at parties. Being crazy was something that was typical at parties.

Holding her dainty hand in his Kuro gave it a light shake. She was much smaller than him, but that was pretty typical of many girls. The senior usually was much taller than his female friends, but he was a guy. "It is very nice to meet you, Alyss. I am Kuro Campbell, the Mad Hatter at your service." He said while giving her a bright smile. It was time to turn on some charm.

But I really do not wish
to go among mad people...
She turned a little pink realizing she had left her mouth open, waiting for flies to fly on in, and closed it. Looking away like she was some sort of idiot. She placed a hand over her mouth trying to clear her throat before he responded to her question. She looked to him as he introduced himself and pondered for a moment. She’d gotten a brief introduction to her spirit, or at least something’s she could relate to, as well as people she might like to talk with. But Alyss never found herself moving toward anyone, people seemed to come to her these days. She didn’t want to intrude upon anyone else, and she was new.

The Mad Hatter, he had said. She looked very much surprised and laughed a little loudly. She covered her mouth, and waved her hand, ”I’m sorry, did you say the Mad Hatter?” she cleared her throat, ”Pardon my manners, really I don’t know what came over me.” she put her hand over her chest, that burst of laughter caught her by surprise. She offered him a sheepish smile as he took her dainty hand.

”Alice Lidell…” she nodded her head, the book in particular that rested on her lap was indeed Alice in Wonderland, but Kuro looked nothing like the black and white picture in the book. Surely Alyss looked nothing like Alice, she shared more resemblance to the Disney character that possessed her so. Nut Kuro didn’t look like a short old man, in fact. She was still learning all the kinks of this. The laugher must have come from her relief that he wasn’t going to be a geezer running her down with riddles and questions. ”Well it’s very nice to meet you, Mister Hatter.” she replied solomly, bowing her little head. ”Is that why you came over? I’m not completely sure about these things yet…but I just…” she played with the ends of her dress, ”I feel like I’ve known you all my life…” she shrugged her shoulders. Hatter and Alice were not the best of friends in the novel at all. They were actually quiet cross with one another by the tea parties end. She pondered why she felt so comfortable with Kuro, it may have just been the fact the spirits were familiar with one another. From the same universe, same time frame…Maybe once they realized who was dealing with who things would go down hill…
